Island
Statistics
Lanzarote is a fast growing island. In this section you will
see just how fast. You will learn about population, tourism,
and other island related facts and figures. It will prove
interesting reading to both tourists and businesses alike.
The figures presented will allow readers to plot trends, showing
highs and lows in any given category.
Lanzarote is the most northern
of the islands that form the Canarian Archipelago. It is an
Autonomous Community, enjoying a decentralised system of government.
This Community have their own government and parliament.
The Island Cabildo's are the
centres of government for each of the seven islands of the
Archipelago. Created in 1912, the Cabildo of Lanzarote is
a political and administrative body. The Island is then divided
into territories or municipalities of smaller areas, which
are administered by the Ayuntamientos.
Lanzarote is formed by seven
Ayuntamientos: Arrecife (capital of the island), Haría,
San Bartolomé, Teguise, Tías, Tinajo and Yaiza.
The island of La Graciosa, with only five hundred inhabitants,
belongs to the municipality of Teguise. Each Ayuntamiento
controls the following towns and villages. |

Climate
Meteorological
Data (2001)
The Canary Islands offer warm temperatures
all year round, which makes them a very attractive holiday destination,
especially in the winter months. Lanzarote with it's arrid landscape,
relatively low humidity and cool winds, means that the climate
is always pleasurable. The chart below shows the figures for
last year. These figures do not tend to vary that much, and
give a good idea of weather conditions. Note:
Calima is a type of mist which is a result of the Sirrocco winds
blowing in from the Sahara desert. |

Employment
Official employment
figures (December 2001)
The chart below shows employment
figures by municipality. The main workforce is based in the
capital, Arrecife, which is not surprising as it holds the largest
population. The second largest work force is the municipality
of Tias which contains Puerto del Carmen, the largest tourist
resort on the Island. The third largest is Teguise, which contains
the second largest tourist resort of Costa Teguise. |

Tourism
- by Country No.
of tourists on the island by country (2001)
Numbers of holiday makers coming
to Lanzarote are increasing every year, which is further confirmation
of that fact that Lanzarote is fast developing into a top tourist
destination. According to the Cabildo figures, the number of
tourists ten years ago in 1991 was just over a million, whereas
now it's nearly double that figure. While the majority of tourists
are from the UK, Germany and Ireland, people travel here from
all over the world, the chart below shows tourist figures by
country.
Over 1.8 million people made
Lanzarote their holiday destination last year. |

Tourism
- by month No.
of tourists on the island by month (2001)
It proves more interesting reading
to see the tourist levels by month, as the figures show for
last year a surprising high in March, when one would expect
a higher influx in July and August. |
