Wind Surfing
Lanzarote is one of the worlds best windsurfing destinations.
With ideal weather conditions it is perfect for both beginners
and experts at the sport. Many professionals come to the
here to train for competitions. There are many training
schools on the island where you can learn to windsurf, and
also hire the gear.
Las Cucharas beach in Costa
Teguise, one of the favourite haunts of windsurfers,
has been the setting for the National funboard Championships
in the course racing, slalom and waves categories over the
last three years. The best wind conditions are in the summer
months, from May to August.
Top Windsurfing
spots in Lanzarote
Orzola
Orzola is located at
the north end of the island. Windsurf amongst the wild lava
rocks or ride on the east winds that often blow here. Beware,
this is not a spot for beginners, in fact, it's quite dangerous.
Jameos del Agua
Definitely a spot for wave riders. Jameos
del Agua is surrounded by pure nature and is situated
about 20 kms from the north of Costa Teguise. This spot
is probably the hardest one to surf, technically. The waves
break in multiple sections over the volcanic reef. To reach
a take off site, you'll have to cross volcanic rock, so
be advised to wear suitable footwear. Watch out for the
shore break, and when the tide heads out, the waves and
currents can get pretty hectic. With an upcoming tide and
the right swell and wind, you'll get extremely long waves
here. The wind that dominates here is the Passat that blows
side-offshore coming from the left. Sail sizes used lay
between 4,5 and 5,5 square meters.
Famara
Famara, on the north
west side of the island is at it's best when the Passat
wind blows from the east or a low pressure wind comes from
the south during the winter. From the 3 kms long beach at
Famara, you'll see the islands of La Graciosa, Alegranza
and Montaña Clara in the distance. And the waves
are spectacular (sideshore wind conditions). Only a few
locals tend to surf here, so you'll experience total freedom.
Los Charcos
For a full run: start off at Las Cucharas in Costa
Teguise in the direction of 'The Temple bend 300 meters
further. The waves break into 2 sections there, something
you'll miss starting off at the titled spot. The Passat
hits home base sideshore at this spot, and the waves will
let you ride. However Los Charcos dries out at low tide.
Watch out for the strong current at the bend, it'll pull
you directly onto the cliffs
Las Cucharas
The best known spot on Lanzarote is also a main tourist
beach in Costa Teguise.
The Passat is blocked in most places by buildings but can
become strong at times. In Las Cucharas bay the wind blows
the hardest. Due to the flat water conditions and strong,
steady winds further out, this is the place for freestylers.
If you want to train on your wave riding, the northern and
eastern directions of the bay are right on during the upcoming
tide and great swell. About 300 meters out from the point
there's a wave break that can get very high. Normally the
waves are far apart and break in such a manner that a beginner
can handle them.
Playa Honda
Playa Honda is situated 3 kms south from Arrecife, Lanzarote’s
capital, and close to the airport. This spot is dominated
by the strong Passat wind coming from over land, and flat
sea conditions.
El Tiburon
Situated between Playa Honda and Playa Matagorda, El Tiburon
is a good wave spot with the wind blowing side- to side-offshore,
with a better than average change to find wind and
Playa Matagorda
Playa Matagorda, provides flat water with bump-and-jump
conditions.
