Horse Riding
HORSE riding is one of those pursuits that many people have had a desire to try at some point but never got round to doing. Several factors may put them off such as time, cost or lack of accessibility to a stable. Here in Lanzarote, horse riding is a hobby that anyone can indulge in with relative ease, from absolute beginners to experienced riders. The thought of charging through wide open spaces on a beautiful horse feeling the wind in your hair and a sense of freedom in your heart appeals to you... then look no further. Horse riding is available to everyone here in Lanzarote. Despite the lack of grass there are centers all over the island where you can go on organised riding tours.

But let’s not get carried away. It may take some time before the ‘charging’ bit starts! The various equestrian centers on Lanzarote cater for children and adults of all levels. Their stables have many working horses in addition to retired and breeding horses.
The type of services offered include:

  • Pony rides for children
  • Horse riding lessons for adults and children (from about four years of age)
  • Short ride outs for inexperienced riders
  • Long ride outs for experienced riders

The ride outs follow a routes featuring spectacular Lanzarote landscapes (though first-timers may be too busy clinging to the reigns to notice!) The guides not only lead the way but also give instruction on how to handle the horse and develop from a walk to a trot or canter. If you find the height of the animals quite daunting at first, you can have a round in the paddock first to decide if you want to have a full ride out.

Horse riding keeps you very fit and is a lot more fun too! Horses are always honest and they even like you when you’re in a bad mood! The stables will provide riding hats for everyone and it’s best to wear trainers or closed shoes (flip flops are not suitable) and trousers rather than shorts.
