Island Tourist Guide - Beaches

Extra Special Beaches
With arguably some of the best beaches in the world and certainly in Europe, both Lanzarote and Fuerteventura can lay claim to some truly spectacular beaches and, refreshingly, they are not all lined-up with sunbeds and parasols as far as the eye can see.

IF you are looking for something a little out of the ordinary when you pack your towel and suncream into your beach bag, look no further...

Papagayo
Soft, sandy beach with calm, blue waters

Papagayo is thought by many people to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Spain and it really is worth visiting despite the difficult journey. There is quite a steep slope to negotiate down to the beach itself so leave buggies behind.

Also, there are no shops or restaurants at all so pack some sandwiches and cold drinks if you want to make a day of it.

Papagayo is a bay enclosed by rocky cliffs that jut out into the sea. The beach is totally unspoilt and undeveloped so you are seeing nature at its best here. The waters are incredibly inviting and, though you may not venture back once you have seen it because of its tricky location, you will never forget it. This is the sort of scenery postcards are made of so be sure to have your camera with you. ´

Ed´s Opinion: Go and see it for yourself - Papagayo is simply a beautiful beach and you will not be disappointed. Go for the day to make the slightly tricky journey worthwhile - and don't forget to take a cool box packed full of goodies, as you won't find anywhere to buy a drink or something to eat.

Famara
Rugged mountain backdrop embracing wild waters

The longest beach in Lanzarote (nine kilometres), Playa de Famara is a windsurfer's paradise because of the constant Trade Winds blowing in off the Atlantic (but beware: these waters can be dangerous and are not recommended for swimming).

This beach is not exactly a sunbathing hotspot because of the winds, but there are a few windbreakers built into the beach using large rocks.

What this beach is perfect for is a long, lazy stroll. You will marvel at the magnificence and beauty of the Famara mountains creating a fantastic backdrop to the coast. They are breath-taking.

Nearby villages serve locally caught fresh fish but bring some provisions with you if you are likely to want a drink or snack as there are no amenities within walking distance once you reach the beach.
This beach attracts nudists so don't be surprised to see some bathers without their cossies on!

Ed´s Opinion: This beach is one to blow away the cobwebs - somewhere to go when you need a good think. You will leave it feeling energised and more positive. It just has that effect on you because of the force of the sea and the beauty of the mountains standing along the coast. Roll up your trousers and walk for an hour along the coast. You'll love it! (And there's not a sunbed in sight!)
