Hi, A good website and I like the mag too!!
but ---- do you ever check your received letters before you put them in?? - I think not....... its just too easy to damage good reputations on the strength of a letter - had it occured to you that sometimes the letters are just malicious untruths ......

Having recently purchased an appartment in Metagorda, I wonder if someone can inform me about the "disused park" situated between the Sol Moromar Appts and the Centro Comm. near the beach. It looks like it had, at one point, a water features and some type of rail system.
Thanks, Marty

Beware of Shoddy Tradesman!!
Having lived on the Island of Lanzarote for 15 years now I would just like to offer some free advice to everyone.
In recent years the amount of "Profesional Tradesman" has spiralled beyond belief.
After the recent storm that battered our Island, The frightening truths of bad workmanship has shown its true colours.
In the past few days I have seen patio floors sunk by as much as a foot!, Badly laid roof felt torn off completely, Satellite dishes have been torn from roofs due to lack of fixing, pergolas torn out and vanish etc... The list goes on!
So a word of warning, Be very selective who you choose to undertake work for you as the Storms will haunt us again!!

HI MESSAGE TO ANYONE WHO IS BUYING OR NEEDING MAINTENANCE/MANAGEMENT FOR THEIR PROPERTY. My husband and I have purchased a 2 bedroom apartment on the brand new complex of El Palmeral Costa Teguise. We arrived on the 9th Nov to find the apartment in a mess, no electric, wires hanging where light fittings should be. We had called various D.I.Y. contacts on the Island but no one returned our calls. We started to panic. By chance we found a flyer in our letter box from a chap called Andy Adams. We have to say he was amasing. He came the following morning and then for 4 days took us around the island to all the furniture, electical, houseware shops. Then he put curtain poles up, bathroom fittings, shelves, lights etc. He and his wife Sue became friends and they are now going to manage our property for us. They were very helpful, and didn't charge the earth for doing it. Their daughter Gemma is also offering a babysitting service. So if you become stuck like !
us, please call Andy & I'm sure he'll help you out. Tel: 646750123. (Thanks again Mate)

CATTERIES & KENNELS in LANZAROTE: WHERE??????
Where do pet-owners board their dogs / cats on Lanzarote?
We're relocating to Playa Honda with our two cats, but will be making trips back to the UK and other parts of the Canaries / Spain (yes, Lanzarote is great -- but we don't want to be 'trapped' there because we can't board our pets).
We've never seen any ads for kennels or catteries, nor heard of any recommendations. Can any pet lover advise??

Hi Everyone!
Having lived on the island up to the ages of 15 and 17 respectively, myself and my girlfriend are looking to move back after both finishing University. She is a newly qualified Doctor (specialised in Paediatrics) and I'm a graduate of LSE (London School of Economics) with a degree in International Business and Corporate Relations. I speak fluent spanish and she can speak it fairly well.
My main query is whether there is a Job Centre type shop in Lanzarote that can deal with the more highly qualified job vacancies, and not just bar staff type work.
Stephanie would obviously like to work in a Hospital/Doctors Surgery and I would like to work for an organisation (E.g. I know Proctor and Gamble are on the island) or a Hotel.
Does anyone have any information on this? We still hold valid DNI's/residencia's etc.

Buying and letting apartments is not as easy as it may seem. We have two on the island, one is a long let and the other holiday let. Yield is 15% on the holiday and 7% on the long let. Please remember that buying is the easy bit, maintaining is a different issue with insurance, community, electric, water, rubbish, insurance, cleaning, maintenance etc etc soon erode income. If having two apts in Lanzarote was the answer to early retirement I would have moved there a long time.

EXPENSIVE DRINKS! my husband and I went to what used to be harley rock the other night to find it is now an irish bar, this however is not the problem,we were charged 10 euros for TWO bottles of coronita, while in charlies we were only charged 6 I appreciate size of venue and overheads etc as we ourselves own a business in costa teguise, however this is a gross over inflation of profit and can only hope it does not put off future tourists to this normally cost effective holiday island!!

Fraudulent retailers of digital cameras in Playa Blanca
I returned this morning (8 October 2005) from a holiday on your wonderful Island, and have discovered that I have been the subject of a fraudster in the purchase of a digital camera in one of the high street shops in Playa Blanca.
The retailer concerned sold me a Digital Camera valued at about •150.00 for the sum of •648.00. This purchase was made on the basis of his "expert" advice in comparison with the technical specifications of a Nikon 8700 camera.
Is there any Agency that I can turn to in Lanzorote in order to have this matter investigated and this fraudulent retailer put out of business and perhaps the monies returned. On the retailer's own admission and on evidence produced in the course of our discussions, I was only one of many upon whom, on that same day, the same fraudulent transaction had been successfully carried out.
This was only one of the fraudulent attempts made in the course of my dealing with this retailer and his enthusiastic assistant. It appears to be the normal manner of doing business in that shop.
I otherwise had a wonderful holiday on your Island and it is a pity that this particular type of activity should be allowed to damage its image.

I am a hobby geologist and I am monitoring earthquakes all over the world via a network that's operating world wide and got its headquarter in Berlin (Geoforschungszentrum Potsdam) http://www.gfz-potsdam.de/geofon
When I discovered the article of an earthquake in Lanzarote I was immediately suspicious - cause I didn't get an earthquake alert for that day (at least not for the Canary Islands region). And because I love Lanzarote (and plan moving to lanzarote in the near future) an earthquake alert wouldn't have gone unnoticed throgh my e-mail-account.
As a child I encountered an earthquake in the late sixties that was about 6.5 on Richter. In this case there was a deep sound audible that was somewhat similar to a 'screeetch' but only 5-6 octaves lower than you would expect.
In Dec 2004 our house has been distressed about an earthquake with magnitude 3.8 and this time it was almost not audible.
An earthquake of 2 or less on Richter will not be audible to the human ear - at least not the movement of the Earth's crust itself. And anyway it may not be a bang or a sound like an explosion or a shot.
For further information you might contact me via eMail.

Reference Telefonica in English. This company is an agent for Telefonica but a separate company. I notice that if you compare prices for a basic telephone line, the price on the English site is a couple of Euro more expensive monthly than on the Telefonica.es site. I suppose this is how they get their commission.

Dear Sirs,
As a resident of the island, I have a dial up internet connection, and wished to upgrade to broadband.
I saw an advert in a Canarian publication for a company called Telefonica in English. I decided to contact them via their website. I completed the online form in order for them to set me up with an ADSL connection. I checked on the site whether my locality (Arrecife) would be eligible. They indicated that it was.
After a couple of weeks I contacted them to ask how things were progressing. They told me that my property could not be connected to broadband (even though at least two close neighbours in similar houses have it).
Looking at my bank statement the other day I noticed that the company had deducted 17.40 Euros from my account.
When I phoned them to query it, they said that it was for a search to see whether I was eligible for ADSL and that it was itemised on the website.
Fair enough, but I would have thought that this should only be payable if they were successful in providing the service. To add insult to injury, it was I who had to contact them at my expense on these occasions.
Any comments? Martin, Arrecife

I am bringing my suitcase out with me when I come to start setting up my apartment. However having decided not to ship over anything just sell it instead I find that I still have quite a lot that I need to take out. Mainly small items and suitcaseable! but will leave me with excess baggage - so my question is - is anyone either in UK or Lanzarote going out by van which has a small corner to put some of my personal bits in and thereby saving me shipping costs. Otherwise it will be an extra case on every trip plus excess baggage costs. gill_a_davison@hotmail.com

Hello in answer to a lot of the messages ive just read i would just like to say that, i have been living on the island now for almost 20 years, i have also bought up a son on my own with no help from anyone and here we are enjoying this paradise and not complaing about it! It really annoys me when people put this place down, firstly, we must not forget that is a spanish island, its not ruled by English law so therfore can not be compared to UK. Secondly we DO have consumer rights here, every establishnent has to have reclaim forms "hojas de reclamacion" and if not should be reported. There is a consumer rights office in the "cabildo de Lanzarote" building. Thirdly, Hospitals, these Doctors, Nurses etc do actually have a lot more traing than they do in UK! and are very good at their jobs, they have all the modern equipment and in case of EMERGENCY are seen to a lot quicker than ive seen any where else! I think perhaps the main problem is the communication be!
tween English speaking and Spanish speaking and although most people here do speak a certain amount of English, dont you think its up to us to learn their language? after all we are in their country!

Some answers to the "SOME INFO OF THE ISLAND"
1)If you like to know when the Tahiche Prison was built, you have to ask the Ayuntamiento.
2) Which policestation are you talking about? As you might know there are various ones and you can find them under useful telephine numbers in the gazette eg the one for Tias:0034-928 834 101 or Arrecife:928 811 317.just ask freindly if they have s.o. available who speaks english most of them do anyway...
3)What do local bank holiday represent in the uk?
I mean well there are different Ayuntamientos here and all of them do have different fiesta days. Most of them are catholic related holiday-
days some are canarien fiesta days like the dia de canarias which is obviously related to the canarian historie....Again you be best of asking the Ayuntamiento for further info.
4)Who cares????Elecrticity is provided from TF or main Spain anyway....

COMPLAINTS FORMS
Dear readers under Spanish law every establishment open to the public has to have complaints forms available for customers ,you are entitled to ask for if you want to make any complaint, in the event that they do not hand them to you when asked for one like in the case of the lady with the shoes you should call the local police which has to ask for the form for you, if this is not handed out police will make a report which you must get a copy and take it or send it to the consumers office in the Cabildo, they will take action against the shop and fine them.
