Sorry LA have to disagree, a majority of the armed forces take the discipline they are taught into every day life with them and treat others with respect.  It is a small minority that don't.  I do speak from experience I have been involved with the forces in one way and another for a long time.  It is so unfortunate that too many people have had experience of the minority and not the majority.  I hope they are dealt with severely both here in Lanzarote and booted out of the army they do not deserve to wear the uniform.

Sorry GG so you are saying then that the British navy over the last 300 hundred years have not run amok in ooh Gibralter, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Singapore, most of the West Indies...in fact anywhere where they have been stationed!

Ditto the army boys.

Not remotely condoning it but disagree with people who are trying to make it into some sort of modern phenomenon, broken britain all that cr@p that wouldn't have happened 40 years ago etc.

It would and it did.

I think some on here are missing the point, we're talking about a small family bar, with children running around, in Costa Teguise.
This is a new phenomenon. For Gods sake, people throwing bottles glasses and chairs in the vicinity of children and other family members. This is most definitely new to Costa Teguise, If other places want to tolerate this behaviour, then that's their choice.
But myself, and I dare say everyone else that lives here, want this sort of behaviour stamped out now! and I mean STAMPED.
If  it means the Guardia shooting these scum when they kick off then so be it, they aren't worth sympathy. You can guess what the Canarians must think of Brits in general, these lowlife are the worst ambassadors of Britain to come to these shores in a long time.
It's times like this, I feel so ashamed to be British.

Just goes to prove my point on earlier posts LA don't condone softly softly approach to violence of any forms outside the realms of a warzone . If they are proven to be military personnel then they should be jailed and booted out of the forces lose all pension or other rights. I lived in Tenerife before coming here one of the factors contributing to my moving was the increased violence and bad behaviour by mainly the brits , lager louts football supportes etc that went on the rampage with regularity , I am not saying all football supporters are violent before anyone jumps down my throat , but from my experience it was the p****** up brit youths   that were involved 9 times out of 10. ( again not all briits are bad )
We must as Ex Pats  make it known that this behaviour is not acceptable Here . things are tough enough without bad press about our beautiful Island .

Actually coolboy - the reduction in football violence from its peak in the 70s and 80s is one of the success stories of british policing.

Look at the attendances now that grounds are safe compared to then. Obviously the product on the pitch is better but no way you would have taken your family to games back then knowing the intercity firm where ready and waiting down an alley way.

Its just a shame now that the thugs from Eastern Europe and the Italian police still see the English fans as thugs and are up for a fight.

Coolboy - where does anyone condone a softly softly approach? Am sure the navy were hanging sailors in the 1700s and 1800s for kicking off on shore leave.

I repeat I would suggest that due to increased proffessionalism the armed forces are far better behaved now than in the past. This disgraceful incident just highlights how rare they are.

So what actually is your point coolboy?

I find it "interesting" that the bulk of the discussion is about the accused being British military and not the apparently unusual event of of a bar brawl, or whatever it was.  I guess it's the "angle" that makes it "news" and discussion on the angle naturally follows.

But even more interesting is the statement "It is incidents like this that makes me ashamed to say that I am British too."  If the accused had been identified as having blue eyes would we see the statement "It is incidents like this that makes me ashamed to say that I have blue eyes too."

By the way, it's now in at least one UK national.

Look, these things happen everywhere.
I have never seen a fight in my time in Lanza (about 12 years).
So this is a very rare incident and just shows how great an island it is. Have heard about Ibiza, Tenerife and other holiday destinations that are a NO GO for families because of this kind of trouble.
And really bugs me when I hear the English slating there own ???

Well reading some of the comments on the mail website, it seems they may be from the Welsh Guards
and that the MOD is not commenting as it has a care of duty!!!

Must be causing a few mid-night oils to be burnt in Madrid at the minute I would think....

Heard of sub judice krh?! One of the key parts of the british legal system.

Even though the incident happened outside of the UK it would be completely out of order for the MoD to make a comment in any way. It could be taken as being harsh on the victims but until the spanish legal system has resolved the issue it would be out of order for the MoD to comment on what is for the moment a spanish issue.

"In England and Wales, Ireland,[1] New Zealand, Australia, India, Pakistan, and Canada it is generally considered inappropriate to comment publicly on cases sub judice, which can be an offence in itself, leading to contempt of court proceedings. This is particularly true in criminal cases, where publicly discussing cases sub judice may constitute interference with due process."

Obviously if they are prosecuted I have no doubt the book will be thrown at them.

A sixth person has now been detained and the accused have had their period of detention extended by the courts.

8 soldiers were involved.  Again I am ashamed to call myself British.
In the Daily Mail they print that a letter to PM Gordon Brown states:

Accompanying their letter with horrific pictures of the injuries, the customers called on Mr Brown to ‘review the training methods used in the Army if they are to be put into practice on innocent people’: ‘Your soldiers – eight highly trained and perfectly coordinated men – totally wrecked a restaurant and ran off after their bloody assault.

We are going off topic now, but referance the letter. What a load of rubbish suggesting
they review the training method's, they should not be used on innocent people to start with!

Soliders need to be trained on how to defend themselves etc, I suspect drink is the only
problem at the end of the day....
